Julian Wolff’s report in the Baker Street Journal regarding the 128th anniversary of Holmes’s birth is succinct yet effusive. The evening’s repast was deemed “sumptuous,” recipients of honours were indeed “deserving,” and the proceedings afforded “many desirable keepsakes.” Thirteen Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Earlier in the day, the BSI invested its second female member (the first being Lenore Offord in <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/the-1958-bsi-dinner.html">1958</a>).  Lisa McGaw, who oversaw the William Gillette Luncheon for many years, was awarded the Irregular Shilling as “Mrs. Hudson” at that luncheon. Wolff’s notes on the evening conclude with the following bon mot: “Asimov was in unusually (perhaps usually) fine fettle and literally brought down the house.”

In the Baker Street Journal, the Commissionaire recorded that the 1981 Dinner marking Sherlock Holmes’s 127th birthday was “one of its best.” Distinguished guests included visitors from Scandinavia: Nils Nordberg, Åke Runnquist, and Ted Bergman (“The Honourable Philip Green”). Ad (Mrs.Will) Oursler was toasted as The Woman. The readings of Sherlock Holmes’s Prayer, the Musgrave Ritual, and the Constitution and Buy-Laws were stirring; the Canonical Toasts were especially witty and clever. Members stood on the terrace “to have our last quiet talk with those stalwarts who had dropped from the ranks since we had last met.” Eleven Irregular Shillings were bestowed. A number of characteristically witty talks were delivered, with Edward Clark’s oration being singled out for particular mention. 
 
The Commissionaire was even presented with two medals from the Maiwand Jezails and the Irish Secret Society at Buffalo. Attendees departed at the evening’s close “with the determination to outdo ourselves next year, if possible.”

The 1980 Dinner marked Sherlock Holmes’s 126th birthday.  After the first Canonical toast to The Woman, Peggy (Mrs. H. W.) Starr was given the honour.  The dinner included all rites and ceremonies faithfully observed.  The entire programme was carried out as usual, except for one delightful interruption: “an Irregular committee took over the proceedings and delivered tributes to the surprised, flattered, and blushing Commissionaire on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday.”

The 1979 Dinner marking Sherlock Holmes’s 125th birthday was “a great success and a new attendance record was made.” Julia Rosenblatt was honored as The Woman. Twelve Irregular shillings were bestowed. 
 
Short talks were proffered by Mark McPherson, Will Oursler, Ed Clark, Al Rosenblatt, and Isaac Asimov. The Baker Street Journal notes that “the contributions of Clark and Asimov were especially brilliant.” The Irregular reception at The Grolier Club, which took place the following day, January 6, was also termed “an unusually enjoyable (and crowded) affair, attended by 200 Irregulars and their ladies.”

Celebrations of Sherlock Holmes’s 124th birthday were deemed “unusually successful” due to the august presence of honored guests Lady Gore-Booth at the pre-prandial cocktail party and of Lord Gore-Booth, President of The Sherlock Holmes Society of London, at the dinner. Diane Nolan was fêted as The Woman. Six Irregular shillings were bestowed. 
 
Missives from scions worldwide, including a message from Colin Prestige, Chairman of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, were delivered with gusto. Attendees were treated to learned discourses from Lord Gore-Booth, John Bennett Shaw, Dr. David Musto, Dr. Charles Goodman, and Will Oursler. According to Julian Wolff’s notes, the latter was in fine form: “Without detracting from the others, it must be said that Will Oursler was in rare form; in fact, many in the gathering claimed that they actually understood what he was talking about.”
