The 132nd anniversary of Holmes’s birth included all the traditional rites and procedures. Walter Pond’s daughter, Nancy Pond, was toasted as The Woman. Philip R. Brogdon offered a splendid toast to Sherlock Holmes as Dr. Watson’s (and our) best friend.  John Bennett Shaw displayed, and defended, a newly discovered life mask of Sherlock Holmes.  Isaac Asimov doubled as tenor and baritone in a Canonical parody of Gilbert and Sullivan.   However, the major news from this Dinner was Julian Wolff’s announcement that he was retiring from the leadership of The Baker Street Irregulars (having held the job longer than anyone else).  Julian said that he decided to be the first to get out alive and that he had chosen Thomas L. Stix, Jr.as his successor. 
 
At reception at The Grolier Club the next day, Julian celebrated his eighty-first birthday. Tom Stix’s first official act as our Wiggins was his announcement that Julian will be our honored Commissionaire Emeritus.

The 131st anniversary of Holmes’s birth witnessed a “memorable” program, including Holmesian songs (prepared by none other than Isaac Asimov) and John Bennett Shaw’s stories of early Sherlockians. Thirteen individuals received their Irregular shillings. Albert M. Rosenblatt “exercised his judicial powers” to inform the attendees that this date also marked the Commissionaire’s eightieth birthday, to “suitably raucous reactions.” 
 
The reception at the Grolier Club the next day, January 12, saw the announcement of the Baker Street Journal’s new editor, Philip Shreffler.

As you can hear in our recording below of Isaac Asimov, the 1984 BSI Dinner was highly entertaining. It started with a Dinner invitation that paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of the first BSI Dinner in 1934. Fittingly, this occasion saw “record attendance of enthusiastic Sherlockians from many nations and four separate continents.”  Fourteen participants were invested and received their Irregular shillings. The proceedings sounded truly sublime. To wit, Julian Wolff reported in the Baker Street Journal: 
 
“The programme was unusually interesting and included a great effort by Isaac Asimov, our Resident Genius, as well as eloquent talks by Bliss Austin and Robert Harris, both of whom recalled earlier days of the Irregulars. It was a contented lot of Sherlockians who left at the end of the dinner with cries of “Wait until next year!”

The 129th anniversary of the Master’s birthday featured many distinguished guests, including the Dean and Assistant Dean of Columbia College. Francine Morris (Mrs. Wayne B.) Swift was toasted as The Woman. Fifteen Irregular Shillings were given out.  Stephen Stix, “the only third-generation Investitured Irregular,” and Edward F. Clark, delivered post-prandial talks, followed by “our resident genius,” Isaac Asimov. Wolff’s report in the Baker Street Journal effusively concludes: “Since there is nothing that can follow Isaac, we then adjourned, after bestowing upon him the highest honour of the Irregulars, the Two-Shilling Award.” George Fletcher and Ralph E. Edwards also shared in the Two-Shilling glory.
