BSI Trust Research Fellowships

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Baker Street Irregulars Trust and the Lilly Library are now accepting applications for research fellowships for <b>2024</b>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The BSI Trust Research Fellowships support research on various aspects of Sherlockian studies that require consultation of the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/archive.html">BSI Archive at the Lilly Library</a>. Two fellowships, funded by the BSI Trust, are awarded annually, for a period of up to one month of research, with a stipend of up to $2,500. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These fellowships provide research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students, college graduates, postdoctoral scholars, and independent researchers. Successful candidates are selected on the basis of the applicant’s qualifications, the significance or importance of the project, and the appropriateness of the proposed study to the BSI Archive. Fellowships must be used during the year which they are awarded.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Baker Street Irregulars is a literary society dedicated to the study of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Victorian world. Founded in 1934, the BSI is the oldest existing Sherlockian society in the world.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Baker Street Irregulars Trust is part of the BSI and is the repository of the Irregulars’ collective memory. Established in 2003, the Trust’s mission is to collect, preserve, and provide access to historical documents, correspondence, papers, photos, recordings, ephemera, and memorabilia relating to the BSI and its members and friends. A self-described “kid Sherlockian” who received the Canon as an 11th birthday present and was so captivated that she forgot to open the remainder of her presents, Susan founded her first scion during her first job teaching classical studies at a middle school in Michigan. Mickey bought her first deerstalker long before she ever read the Canon and before she was introduced by Susan to the Sherlockian community. However, once they met during the BSI Weekend in January 1980, Susan and Mickey’s combined artistic achievements in sectors such as writing, song composition, travel, radio production, and the dissemination of beekeeping knowledge have continually enriched the Sherlockian world.</p><p>A notable focus of the conversation is Susan and Mickey’s outstanding commitment to mentoring younger generations of Sherlockians, especially through Susan’s organization of the monthly ASH Wednesday meetings for so many years. </p><p>Susan’s reminiscences include fascinating details about the events leading up to the fabled 1991 BSI Cocktail Party at which she and five other women were fully invested in the BSI by Tom Stix. Mickey shares some of the creative process behind many of the Sherlockian verses she has penned. Their oral history includes incredible milestones and encounters with notable individuals too numerous to list here.</p><p>Susan received the Two-Shilling award in 2002. She passed away in September 2020.</p><p>Susan and Mickey’s interview testifies to a partnership which embodies the qualities that draw successive generations to the world of Sherlock Holmes: erudition, whimsy, creativity, and companionship with kindred spirits.</p>

Costa has authored numerous articles on Sherlockian bibliography.  In 2005 he won the Morley-Montgomery Award for the best BSJ article of the year. Robert Katz and John Bergquist announced BSI Press Editors awards (or “Eddies”) to Harrison “Terry” Hunt and Linda Hunt for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2019/11/11/aboriginals/">“Aboriginals”</a>; Candace J. Lewis and Ira B. Matetsky for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2019/12/26/upon-the-turf/">Upon the Turf</a>; to Marino Alvarez and Tim Greer for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2019/12/28/education-never-ends/">Education Never Ends</a>; and to Constantine Rossakis and Dan Stashower for T<a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2019/12/30/worst-man-in-london/">he Worst Man in London</a>.</p><p>Ross Davies read the Constitution and Buy-Laws. Shannon Carlisle toasted Mrs. Hudson. Les Klinger toasted Mycroft Holmes. Dana S. Richards toasted Watson’s second wife. Barbara Rusch toasted Sherlock Holmes. Bruce R. Parker honored an Old Irregular, Ted Schulz. Jenn Eaker led the reading of the Musgrave Ritual.</p><p>Candace Lewis delivered an erudite presentation on artist Horace Vernet in the year 1820 (building upon Holmes’ reference in “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter”). Rebecca Romney offered a wide-ranging examination of the concept of 20/20 vision while noting the 133rd anniversary of the publication of <i>Beeton’s Christmas Annual</i>. Michael Berdan surveyed the impact of the Prohibition ban, whose centennial (16 January 1920) was imminent.</p><p>Henry Boote, BSI Musical Director, did his usual yeoman’s work by preparing an extremely clever medley celebrating Michael Whelan’s tenure as Wiggins. He also accompanied Donny Zaldin’s musical quiz.</p><p>Marsha Pollak, taking over from Francine Kitts, led the assembled to “Stand with me here upon the terrace” to honor members who had passed during the previous year.</p><p>Michael Whelan announced his final round of investitures as Wiggins to nine new Irregulars. Andy Fusco received the Two-Shilling Award. Whelan than concluded the evening by handing over the gavel—in all senses of the word—to Michael Kean.
