Baring-Gould’s Annotated Sherlock Holmes to organizing speakeasies during the BSI Weekend with Gordon Speck and Newton M. Williams. Pj’s job as ground services personnel for Western Airlines led to an appearance in Airport. In addition to her involvement in founding Mixed Blood Theater in Minneapolis, she has also published two mysteries in England, authored multiple award-winning volumes of poetry, and served on the board of the National Federation of Poets. Pj describes Holmes as “the great equalizer” for devotees of all backgrounds and shares how much she values her work with the Beacon Society.. She shares a host of enthralling stories about her affiliation with the Norwegian Explorers of Minnesota, including some of their incredible programs and many of the Sherlockian luminaries associated with the society, such as Austin McLean, Austin Brafford, and Dr. Bryce L. Crawford, Jr. When she first learned about the Sherlock Holmes collection at the University of Minnesota, Pj decided to call the university—a call which just happened to be answered by E.W. (Mac) McDiarmid, University Librarian, one of the founding members of the Norwegian Explorers, and a towering figure in the Sherlockian world, whom Pj describes as her mentor. Pj and Julie McKuras served as the first and second female presidents of the Explorers. One remarkable aspect of this oral history is Pj’s compelling description of her longstanding Red Cross volunteerism. A few years later, his great-aunt gave him for Christmas the Sherlock Holmes Illustrated Omnibus; subsequently, his mother gave him William Baring-Gould’s Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street. Endnotes in Baring-Gould’s edition first introduced the Sherlock Holmes Society of London (SHSL) and The Sherlock Holmes Journal.A complete catalogue of his accomplishments is beyond the scope of this brief description. In 1966, Nick joined The Sherlock Holmes Society of London at age 14. In 1975, he was elected to the Council of the SHSL. He served as Editor of The Sherlock Holmes Journal for 30 years, from 1976-2006. In January 2007, he was made an Honorary Member of the SHSL in recognition of his editorial service.  He was also a Master Copper-Beech-Smith of The Sons of The Copper Beeches of Philadelphia. He published hundreds of erudite pieces, including Sherlock Holmes at Oxford, organized numerous events and trips, and contributed tirelessly across multiple media. He wrote three Baker Street Journal Christmas Annuals and Amazing & Extraordinary Facts: Sherlock Holmes, and co-edited To Keep the Memory Green: Reflections on the Life of Richard Lancelyn Green. Among innumerable captivating anecdotes, Nick’s interview discusses: his early years and family (Basil Rathbone is a third cousin twice removed); his roots in Oxford; the origins of his career in radio broadcasting, beginning with his involvement with the Oxford University Broadcasting Society, and producing features of Sherlockian and Doylean interest; and Anglo-American collaboration, including his involvement in the Three Students Plus, a BSI scion society, and correspondence with Ronald B. De Waal, John Bennett Shaw, and Nathan Bengis. Other fascinating topics include his assessment of The Earthquake Machine and Hellbirds, the Sherlock Holmes pastiches that he published with Austin Mitchelson, and his interactions with Richard Lancelyn Green’s legendary holdings.Nick passed away in August 2022. A self-described “kid Sherlockian” who received the Canon as an 11th birthday present and was so captivated that she forgot to open the remainder of her presents, Susan founded her first scion during her first job teaching classical studies at a middle school in Michigan. Mickey bought her first deerstalker long before she ever read the Canon and before she was introduced by Susan to the Sherlockian community. However, once they met during the BSI Weekend in January 1980, Susan and Mickey’s combined artistic achievements in sectors such as writing, song composition, travel, radio production, and the dissemination of beekeeping knowledge have continually enriched the Sherlockian world.A notable focus of the conversation is Susan and Mickey’s outstanding commitment to mentoring younger generations of Sherlockians, especially through Susan’s organization of the monthly ASH Wednesday meetings for so many years. Susan’s reminiscences include fascinating details about the events leading up to the fabled 1991 BSI Cocktail Party at which she and five other women were fully invested in the BSI by Tom Stix. Mickey shares some of the creative process behind many of the Sherlockian verses she has penned. Their oral history includes incredible milestones and encounters with notable individuals too numerous to list here.Susan received the Two-Shilling award in 2002. She passed away in September 2020.Susan and Mickey’s interview testifies to a partnership which embodies the qualities that draw successive generations to the world of Sherlock Holmes: erudition, whimsy, creativity, and companionship with kindred spirits.

Nelda Richards was honored as The Woman. Then, Peter Blau was surprised by a Festschrift in honor of the 60th anniversary of his investiture. Charles Prepolec toasted Mrs. Hudson. Bonnie MacBird toasted Mycroft Holmes. Candace Lewis toasted Watson's second wife. Bill Mason toasted the Master, Sherlock Holmes.  Dayna Nuhn led the reading of the Musgrave Ritual.  Susan Rice paid tribute to two Old Irregulars, Clifton Andrew and Lisa McGaw.  Robert Katz read the Constitution and Buy-Laws. Katz and John Bergquist presented “Eddies” to a host of talented editors who produced BSI Press titles: Will Walsh and Donny Zaldin for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2018/12/28/canon-law/">Canon Law</a>; Glen Miranker for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2018/12/30/deadly-harpoon/">Deadly Harpoon</a>, and Les Klinger for <a href="https://bakerstreetirregulars.com/2018/12/26/peter-blau/">Peter E. Blau: A Festschrift</a>.The evening saw a host of informed presentations: Andrew Fusco presented on police detectives. Jenn Eaker presented on dogs in the Canon. Emily Miranker opined on the original Baker Street Irregulars. Nick Martorelli presented on Irene Adler. Francine Kitts led the assembled to “"Stand with me here upon the terrace” to honor members who had passed during the previous year.Nine Irregulars received their Shilling. Before the evening concluded with the resonant spectacle of Ray Betzner reading from a typescript owned by Vincent Starrett of Starrett’s “221B,” Michael Whelan announced a forthcoming leadership transition. In 2020, Michael Kean will succeed him as Wiggins. Richard Kitts toasted the guest of honor, Sherlock Holmes.  Curtis Armstrong led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.  Jerry Margolin paid tribute to an Old Irregular, Norman Nolan.  Hartley Nathan read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.Guests were then treated to “intriguing” presentations attesting to the wide range of subject mastery evident among the assembled Irregulars. Ross Davies, accompanied by visual aids, demonstrated the Allies’ stratagems for circulating their literature undetected in gift boxes. Maria Fleischhack lectured on Germans in the Canon and methods of disguise. Will Walsh plumbed the depths of submarine warfare. Francine Kitts led the assembled to “Stand with me here upon the terrace” to honor Irregulars who had passed during the previous year.Ten Irregulars then received their Shilling. John Linsenmeyer, former Baker Street Journal editor, was honored with the Two-Shilling Award. The evening concluded with the traditional recital of Vincent Starrett’s “221B.”Attendees had a near-immediate opportunity to recap the previous evening’s events, as well as the preceding 12 months, at Saturday’s Cocktail Reception at the Yale Club. The fact that the 163rd Birthday Dinner actually took place on January 6, the Master’s birthday, could not but enhance the atmosphere throughout the gala weekend. 
 
The pre-dinner cocktails in the Roof Dining Room of the Yale Club showcased the announcement of Nicole Boote’s honor as The Woman. 
 
After Michael Whelan (BSI’s Wiggins) opened the dinner, Steven Rothman's discussed "Why January 6th?" The toasts opened in fitting style with Robert Stek “o-punning” on the charms of Mrs. Hudson--in his own inimitable way, abetted, if not debated, by Robert Katz.  Clifford Goldfarb had us raise our glasses to Mycroft. Sherry Rose-Bond led the toast to Watson’s Second Wife.  Andrew Fusco toasted Sherlock Holmes.  John Linsenmeyer paid homage “To an Old Irregular,” Edward F. Clark, Jr.  Michael Kean and John Bergquist presented the Editors’ Medals for BSI Publications, the “Eddies,” to the editors of the three BSI volumes that had been completed during 2016 and which would be on sale the next morning in the vendors’ room. 
 
Bill Dorn presented a montage comparing the same Sherlockian scenes in various films.  Andrew Joffe, Sarah Montague, and Paul Singleton staged a comparison of Canonical text and the first drafts of a female Watson.  Tim Greer applied Holmes’ own investigative methods to the Canon to discern that the true author was…William Shakespeare. Mark Alberstat read the Musgrave Ritual. Thomas Horrocks read the Constitution and Buy Laws.  Henry Boote sang about Sherlock’s Birthday to the tune of “What a Wonderful World,” offering an uncanny Louis Armstrong impression. 
 
Francine Kitts delivered another customarily wonderful and touching tribute to departed Irregulars in the “Standing upon the Terrace” ceremony; for the first time ever, these memorials were accompanied by photographs. This truly underscored the enduring links among generations of Sherlockians, all present in different senses of that word. 
 
Seven Irregulars received a Shilling. Ben Vizoskie received The Two-Shilling Award—55 years after it was first awarded to Rex Stout. Steven Rothman was honored with an engraved crystal Milestone Award as the longest-serving Baker Street Journal editor who, at the time of the Dinner, had just presided over his 300th (!) BSJ issue. Wiggins presented Andrew Fusco, Michael Dirda, Susan Vizoskie, and Phillip Bergem each with a “Tip of the Deerstalker” award in recognition for their contributions to the BSI.  In keeping with the evening’s theme of recognizing extensive service, Wiggins himself was surprised with a gift of a Golden Sovereign from the BSI, in recognition of his two decades of leadership. (Similarly, a Golden Sovereign was presented to Julian Wolff, then head of the BSI, at the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/11/the-1973-bsi-dinner.html">1973 BSI Dinner</a>.) 
 
The evening concluded with a recording of Vincent Starrett reciting his poem “221B.” 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the Yale Club, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their masterful and anticipated-year-round poetic rhymed synopsis of the previous year and of the Birthday Weekend.

Evelyn Herzog (The Daintiest Thing Under a Bonnet, 1991) saved her tooth fairy money to obtain a copy of The Complete Sherlock Holmes.  That book became the foundation upon which she attracted a group of other college students at Albertus Magnus College to meet and discuss the Sherlock Holmes stories. Precocious young women, they wrote to William S. Baring-Gould, John Bennett Shaw, <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a>, Ted Schulz, and others and developed ongoing correspondence with them.  While still in high school, Evy learned that (at that time) the Baker Street Irregulars did not admit women to its dinners.  While in college, she and her cohorts still considered it an injustice, and, being the 1960s, they picketed the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1968-bsi-dinner.html">1968 BSI Dinner</a>. 
 
That eventually led to the founding of the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes, of which she is still “The Principal Unprincipled Adventuress.”  Evy was invested in the BSI among the six women (including Susan Rice) whom Tom Stix invested at the memorable <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1991-bsi-dinner.html">1991 BSI Cocktail Party</a> which finally fully opened the BSI to women.  She has been a notable Sherlockian and an important figure in American Sherlockian history. 
 
Along the way, she has met many memorable Sherlockians.  She is expertly interviewed by Susan Rice, and she talks about the many people she has known and the events she not only witnessed, but participated in, and, sometimes, initiated.

Sherlock Holmes’s 162nd birthday was feted by an enthusiastic group, also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1991-bsi-dinner.html"> opening of the BSI to women</a>. 
 
Mike Whelan (the BSI's "Wiggins") honored Tony Montag for his more than fifty years as an Irregular. He also recognized others in attendance with Irregular longevity, including <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a>, Albert Silverstein, <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/04/russell-merritt-interview-oral-history.html">Russell Merritt</a>, George McCormack, Chris Redmond, and James Saunders. 
 
Julia Rosenblatt toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Marilynne McKay gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  Sally Sugarman had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Catherine Cooke toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Marino Alvarez led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual.  Bob Coghill gave a toast to an Old Irregular, Maureen Green Van der Flaes.  Tony Montag read the Constitution and Buy-Laws. 
 
Bert Coules gave an account of Holmes on the radio in the 1930s, a tribute to Edith Meiser.   Peter Blau and Evelyn Herzog gave a "Duet: With an Occasional Chorus" account of the role of women in the BSI from 1934 to the present (which concluded with the singing - for the first time at an annual Dinner of the BSI - of the Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes' "Reindeer Song").  Susan Rice gave a presentation on the rational roots of Holmes's feelings about women. As usual, Henry Boote, at the piano, led the musical entertainment.  Susan Dahlinger provided a marvelous rendition of a song from The Seven Per-Cent Solution film, as Nicholas Meyer was in attendance.  Betsy Rosenblatt did a great job singing "At Last," and Henry Boote charmed us with the singing of his own original composition, both celebrating women in the BSI. Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">“Standing upon the Terrace”</a> ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. 
 
Seven deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Nancy Browning was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a>.  Tom Francis (former Chairman of the BSI Trust) received the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty.  Mike Whelan also appointed two more officers of the BSI: Michael Kean (as "Cartwright") and Bob Katz (as "Billy the Page"). 
 
The evening concluded with Peter Crupe reciting Vincent Starrett’s poem “221B.” 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.

Sherlock Holmes’s 161st birthday was celebrated with great mirth, scholarly presentations, toasts, and memorable moments. 
 
Burt Wolder toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Jacquelynn Morris gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  John Baesch had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Hartley Nathan toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Marsha Pollak led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual. 
 
Raymond Betzner spoke movingly on the real reason that Holmes returned to London after the hiatus. Michael Dirda spoke on Langdale Pike's participation in the Civil War and other important events. Harrison Hunt celebrated the quasquicentennial anniversary of an event, without which, there would be no BSI. David Stuart Davies delivered his one-man play about the four Ms and the poison hedgehog.  Lou Lewis read the BSI’s Constitution and Buy-Laws.  As usual, Henry Boote led the musical entertainment.  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Standing upon the Terrace</a>” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. 
 
Eight deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Inez Bergquist was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a>.  Mary Ann Bradley received the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty. Mike Whelan presented the BSI's “Tip of the Deerstalker Awards” to Marsha Pollak, Ralph Hall, George McCormack, and Jim Saunders. 
 
The evening concluded with SJ Rozan reciting William Schweickert’s “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">A Long Evening with Holmes</a>.” 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.

Sherlock Holmes’s 160th birthday also marked the 80th birthday of the BSI.  It was celebrated with tri-colored cupcakes that matched Holmes’s dressing gown (blue, purple, and mouse) and after-dinner brandy. 
 
Mike Berdan toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Theodora (Teddie) Niver gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/12/glen-miranker-interview-oral-history.html">Glen Miranker</a> had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Mark Levy toasted Sherlock Holmes.   David Houle led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual. 
 
Jan Burke spoke on the forensic nature of Holmes’s work.  Judge Albert Rosenblatt led a debate among Andrew Fusco, Leslie Klinger, Lou Lewis, John Linsenmeyer, Andrew Peck, and Betsy Rosenblatt on whether to amend the BSI’s Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Sonia Fetherston spoke of an Old Irregular, Bliss Austin. Henry Boote led the musical presentation. Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “Standing upon the Terrace” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. 
 
Seven deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Marilyn Nathan was toasted as The Woman. Randall Stock received the Two-Shilling Award for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty. Les Klinger was awarded the Edgar W. Smith Intrepid Irregular Award for his role on behalf of the public domain status of Sherlock Holmes qua literary character and all other canonical characters and events that currently exist in the public domain in the United States.  Mike Whelan presented the BSI's “Tip of the Deerstalker Awards” to Andy Peck, Mitch Higurashi, Susan Rice, Don Curtis, and Maggie Schpak 
 
The evening concluded with Evelyn Herzog reciting Vincent Starrett’s “221B.” 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.  Paul Singleton, Nick Martorelli, and Mary Ellen Rich performed a Sherlock Holmes radio play.

Sherlock Holmes’s 159th birthday was marked with erudite presentations, heartfelt toasts, and, above all, the enduring Sherlockian camaraderie that underpins and infuses every gathering in celebration of the Master.  The theme of the evening was celebrating past BSI leaders. 
 
Daniel Polvere toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Maggie Schpak gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  Don Hobbs had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Peggy Perdue toasted Sherlock Holmes.   John Linsenmeyer read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Thomas Francis led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual. 
 
Given the theme of the evening, (almost) all of the presentations were about former heads of the BSI. Steven Rothman spoke on the life of Christopher Morley.  Gregory Darak spoke on Edgar W. Smith.  Peter Blau reminisced about Julian Wolff.  Susan Rice and Evelyn Herzog talked about Tom Stix, Jr.  Russell Merritt then spoke on the many faces of Moriarty in early films.  Julie McKuras spoke of an old Irregular, former University of Minnesota Librarian and <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> holder, Errett Weir McDiarmid, Jr.  Henry Boote and Lyndsay Faye presented a musical tribute to characters from “The Copper Beeches” and “A Scandal in Bohemia.”  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">“Standing upon the Terrace”</a> ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. 
 
Eight deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  Wiggins presented the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> to Michael Kean for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty.  He presented an Eddy Award to <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale/bsimanuscriptseries.html">John Bergquist</a> (Associate Publisher of BSI Press), <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/wrongpassage.html">Robert Katz</a>, <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/christmasannuals.html">Sonia Fetherston</a>, and <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/wrongpassage.html">Andrew Solberg</a>. James Saunders was recognized for 50 consecutive years of presenting <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a> of the year with a corsage. 
 
Elaine Coppola was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a>.

The 2012 BSI Dinner

The dinner celebrating Sherlock Holmes’s 158th birthday was another evening of recognition, celebration, and scholarship.  The dinner's theme was "His Last Bow" in celebration of the centenary of the beginning of Holmes's involvement in the case.  Wiggins (Michael Whelan) began the evening by lauding the large number of presentations that the BSI has published over the previous decade. 
 
Lyndsay Faye toasted Mrs. Hudson.  Andrew Solberg gave the toast to Mycroft Holmes.  James Saunders had us raise our glasses to Watson's second wife, and Donald Novorsky toasted Sherlock Holmes.   Costantine Rossakis read the Constitution and Buy-Laws.  Vincent Brosnan led the responsive reading of the Musgrave Ritual. 
 
As the dinner's theme was "His Last Bow," Burt Wolder, Robert Katz, and Barbara Rusch all gave related presentations.  Paul Singleton and Scott Monty gave a Sherlockian rendition of the Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks “2,000 Year Old Man” (who sounded very much like <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a>).  Otto Penzler spoke of tales of book selling and sellers, including the old Irregular Lew David Feldman.  Henry Boote led us in singing the BSI’s anthem, “Aunt Clara.”  Francine Kitts, once again, performed a moving “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Standing upon the Terrace</a>” ceremony, remembering those whom we have lost. 
 
Eight deserving Irregulars received their Shilling.  The BSI Trust presented its Benefactor’s Award to <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/12/glen-miranker-interview-oral-history.html">Glen Miranker</a> in recognition of his outstanding generosity to the BSI’s archives.  Wiggins presented The <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a> to Henry Boote for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty.  He presented an Eddy Award to Mary Ann Bradley for editing the 2011 <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/articlesandextras/currentcontents.html">Baker Street Journal</a> Christmas Annual.  
 
Constance Kean was toasted as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a>. 
 
Marsha Pollak concluded the evening’s program with her recitation of Bill Schweickert’s “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">A Long Evening with Holmes</a>.” 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception at the New York City Bar Association, Judge Albert Rosenblatt and his daughter, Betsy Rosenblatt, once again performed their remarkable rhyming summation of the previous year and of the Festivities.  In addition, Henry Boote and James Saunders gave an adapted version of “Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Sheen.”
