The 1969 BSI Dinner

Sherlock Holmes’s 115th birthday was “an even greater success than usual,” so Julian Wolff’s Commissionaire’s Report reads. All Canonical rites, including the Canonical and Irregular toasts, Sherlockian musical performances, and the recitation of the Musgrave Ritual and Sherlock Holmes’s Prayer were diligently performed.  Ceil (Mrs. William S.) Baring-Gould was honored as The Woman. 
 
Tribute was paid to Sherlockians who had passed away over the preceding year. Ten Irregulars were invested. After judges James Nelson, H.W. Starr, and Rex Stout deliberated, Lew Feldman awarded the Morley-Montgomery Award to Poul Anderson (eleven years after Anderson first won in the award’s first year of existence). Feldman then exhibited before the assembled what the Commissionaire fittingly characterized as “the Dead Sea Scroll” of Sherlockian relics: the manuscript notes made by Sir Arthur before A Study in Scarlet was written. 
 
A special award, The Queen Victoria Medal, was given “For Outstanding Contributions to the Quartering of The Union Jack with The Stars and Stripes” to Lord Donegall (in absentia) and Lew D. Feldman. 
 
The evening concluded with reports, speeches (Will Oursler, John Bennett Shaw, Nathan Bengis, and Lyttleton Fox), and performances of the first order, including a demonstration of magicianship by John Mulholland, “the very same exhibition of his art that had baffled Sir Arthur himself.”

Sherlock Holmes’s 114th birthday is possibly best known for an historic event that happened outside of the Dinner.  During the cocktail hour that preceded the Dinner, six young women from Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut picketed the BSI in front of Cavanagh’s restaurant for not allowing women into the Dinner.  When Julian Wolff heard about the picketing, he said to John Bennett Shaw and Peter Blau (with whom the women had corresponded), “Your damned girls are at the door. Do something!"  Shaw and Blau invited the women into the downstairs bar where the women composed a manifesto to be read to the BSI.  "Gentlemen' this is it! We have long been distressed by your apparent reluctance to admit ladies into the BSI. In order to bring our opinion to your attention we have come here through the bitter chill of winter to ask you to reconsider and bow to the feminine influence. It is not for ourselves that we have come—oh, no! it is for those lovers of Sherlock Holmes everywhere (he did get around a lot). In conclusion, we hope that when you are choosing new members you will give equal consideration to the feminine Irregulars." When read to the BSI, the manifesto was met with a deafening silence.  However, the young women went on to form The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes, which became a national Sherlockian organization and still thrives today. 
 
The dinner, itself, was marked by “capacity attendance,” Julian Wolff’s Commissionaire’s Report notes. All Canonical rites, including the Irregular toasts, Sherlockian musical performances, and the recitation of the Musgrave Ritual and Sherlock Holmes’ Prayer, were closely observed. Regine (Mrs. Thomas L.) Stix (Sr.) was toasted as The Woman. Tributes were paid to Sherlockian luminaries who had recently passed, such as William S. Baring Gould and Basil Rathbone. After judges H.W. Starr and James Nelson awarded the 10th annual Morley-Montgomery Award to William Baring-Gould’s “Mrs. Hudson’s Inheritance,” the impresario behind the $100 check, Lew. D. Feldman, was honored for his support of this prize by being named “Guest of the Irregulars.” 
 
Seven Irregulars were invested. The Commissionaire, who during the course of the evening was “surprised and flattered—and delighted” to receive the Two-Shilling Award, closes his account with the estimation that “this was one of the best dinner-meetings we have ever had.”

An unfortunate milestone marked Sherlock Holmes’s 113th birthday: Rex Stout, the long-time master of ceremonies, was unable to be present. Nonetheless, the timely and timeless Sherlockian rituals and rites “were meticulously carried out.” There were the “Conanical” and the Irregular toasts, readings of the Constitution and Buy-Laws, the Musgrave Ritual, Sherlock Holmes’s prayer, and Irregular music. Missives from Sherlockian individuals and societies from around the world, including messages from Adrian Conan Doyle and the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, were read aloud. Peggy (Mrs. James) Nelson was toasted by William Baring-Gould as The Woman. Four new Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Three papers of “unusually high calibre” were delivered by John McCabe, John Bennett Shaw, and H.W. Starr, and the festivities concluded with “much Sherlockian discussion.”

Sherlock Holmes’s 112th Birthday celebration took place against the backdrop of a New York transit strike. But, Sherlockians are undaunted. The dinner enjoyed “a near-record attendance,” including visitors from California, Illinois, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Pola (Mrs. Rex) Stout was honored by Tom McDade as The Woman. Canonical and Irregular toasts were offered, and Scion reports from around the world were delivered. Three Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Near the evening’s closing, the master of ceremonies, Rex Stout, received a “unique” award, The Order of the Blue Carbuncle. Tom Stix (Sr.) and Herbert Brean delivered learned papers, followed by toasts and disputations to round out the evening.

Julian Wolff’s summary of the 111th Birthday Dinner records that “once more the attendance record was broken; 89 of the faithful were present.” Overseen by Rex Stout and chaired by Tom Stix (Sr.), all proper and improper festivities and rituals were observed. Eleanor Cryan (Mrs. Julian) Wolff was honored as The Woman. Canonical and Irregular toasts were proffered, and Bruce Montgomery delighted attendees with a sequel to his father’s established musical masterpiece, “Aunt Clara.” Ten Irregulars were invested at the Dinner. Dr. Marvin Aronson and Herbert Brean delivered papers. Subsequently, reports and addresses from Scions worldwide were delivered aloud.

A record 84 attendees gathered to commemorate Sherlock Holmes’s 110th Birthday.  After Lisa McGaw had been toasted as “The Woman,” Rex Stout called the assembly to order. Departed members were memorialized, and messages of greetings from absent members and Sherlockian societies at home and abroad were acknowledged.  It was announced that the late Jay Finley Christ had received the highest Irregular honour, the Two-Shilling Award, in November.  An unusual award, “a medal as large as a soup plate,” was presented to one of the waiters for long and faithful service. (“They also serve who only stand and wait.”) Irregular Shillings with Investitures were bestowed upon seven new members. 
 
It was announced that Edward F. Clark, Jr. had won the Morley-Montgomery Award. Herbert Brean then presented a vivid and hilarious account of the difficulties encountered by two budding authors (Poe and Doyle) in their attempts to break into print. The Five Orange Pips Quiz was next on the agenda. The formal part of the programme ended with Lord Donegall's message from the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and the reports of our Scion Societies.

Seventy two guests attended the festivities commemorating Sherlock Holmes’s 109th Birthday, under Rex Stout’s direction. Irregular tradition carried the evening: the Constitution and Buy-Laws were read aloud; the four Canonical toasts and the four Irregular toasts (to Edgar W. Smith, Christopher Morley, James Montgomery and Sherlock Holmes) were proffered; and Sherlock Holmes’s prayer, the Musgrave Ritual, Readings from the Writings, and the Challenge in the Canon were all satisfactorily delivered. Five new members were invested. 
 
The absence due to illness of the Marquis of Donegall, of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, was regretfully noted. S. Tupper Bigelow saw his proverbial cup runneth over when, in addition to securing the Morley-Montgomery Award for best article published in the Baker Street Journal the previous year, he won a token from the Journal’s editor for the “physical excellence of his manuscripts.” William Baring-Gould, “author of one of the most remarkable books ever penned,” was given the Irregular Two-Shilling Award. The evening closed with reports from Scion societies, the expected intellectual disputation, and the news that a testimonial dinner to Vincent Starrett is scheduled to take place that March in Chicago.

Sixty eight BSI and guests attended the festivities commemorating Sherlock Holmes’s 108th Birthday. The cocktail hour was enlivened by Will Oursler’s toast to The Woman, Mrs. Charles Honce. In adherence to Irregular tradition, the Constitution and Buy-Laws were read aloud; Frank Waters did the honors. Additional canonical toasts to Mrs. Hudson, Mycroft, and Dr. Watson’s Second Wife (the last delivered by the master of ceremonies, Rex Stout) were proffered, along with The Musgrave Ritual, Sherlock Holmes’s Prayer, and further tributes to Jim Montgomery, Christopher Morley, and Edgar W. Smith. Eight new Irregulars received their Investitures, including Dr. Charles Lauterbach, who received it posthumously instead of in absentia as originally planned.  An extraordinary Irregular award, the Two-Shilling Award, was presented to Rex Stout for services beyond the call of duty. Announcement of the Morley-Montgomery Memorial Award (a cheque of $100 from Lew D. Feldman) went to Robert Keith Leavitt whose article, "The Origin of 221B Worship," was selected by the Judges as the best in The Baker Street Journal during 1961. After this, messages from absent members and from Scion Societies in this country, Denmark and Holland were read. 
 
A tape recording of Jim Montgomery's ''Aunt Clara" was heard, followed by the papers of the evening: 
"Not an Unmatched Performance," by Thomas Stix, Jr.; "New Light on the Agra Treasure," by Philip Kasson; and "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Moriarty," by Tom Stix, Sr. Lord Donegall spoke and was followed by Richard Smith’s report on The Baker Street Irregulars, Inc. He was followed by the reports from the Scion Societies.   The meeting concluded with the toast to Sherlock Holmes, given by Basil Davenport.

Seventy one Irregulars celebrated Sherlock Holmes’ 107th Birthday, under the oversight of Rex Stout. The first two toasts were offered to women—Julian Wolff toasted “A Certain Gracious Lady,” Mrs. Edgar.W. Smith, and Carl Anderson toasted Mrs. James Montgomery, “The Woman.” After the traditional recital of the BSI Constitution and Buy-Laws and the other canonical toasts, William S. Hall delivered a tribute to Edgar W. Smith, who had passed away the previous year, with Howard Haycraft and James Buchholtz adding appropriate remarks. 
 
Ten individuals received their Irregular Shilling. Two Toms then delivered compelling analyses: Tom Stix (Sr. - per Dorothy Stix, BSI) presented a new perspective on the Abbey Grange affair, and Tom McDade discussed the phrenological Holmes. Missives from the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and from Scions around the globe were read aloud. Earle Walbridge delivered the closing toast to the Great Man, and the assembled guests did their utmost to live up to the words of Vincent Starrett, as quoted by James Buchholtz: “Edgar would have wanted us to have a good time tonight.”

Under the oversight of Rex Stout, who served as Gasogene-cum-Tantalus pro tempore, the 106th anniversary of the Master’s birthday was acknowledged with 69 Irregulars in attendance. The festivities opened with the public reading of the Society’s “Constitution and Buy-laws,” as per tradition, assorted canonical toasts, anthems, and readings. Homages were then paid by Edgar W. Smith (Buttons-cum-Commissionaire), to “that other great and wise man,” Christopher Morley, the founder of the Irregulars, and by Carl Anderson to the memory of Jim Montgomery. 
 
The Buttons read off several announcements, including the forthcoming publication in March 1960 of the second edition of Vincent Starrett’s The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. Judges Rex Stout, Edgar W. Smith, and Earle Walbridge awarded the 1959 Morley-Montgomery Award to the cunningly-monikered Daniel L. Moriarty for his Baker Street Journal article “The Woman Who Beat Sherlock Holmes.” 
 
Ten members received their Irregular Shilling. The Buttons read dispatches from Scion Societies, from Indianapolis to Denmark to Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado, who were not represented at the meeting by delegations.  Subsequently, representatives from Scions present at the meeting reported on their activities, including The Marquis of Donegall representing the BSI’s sister society in England, the Sherlock Holmes Society of London. 
 
At the stroke of midnight, Samuel F. Howard offered the toast to “To the Best and Wisest Man Whom We Have Ever Known.”

Julian Wolff initiated the “Two-Shilling Award” in 1962, and bestowed this first “extraordinary Irregular award” on Rex Stout "for extraordinary devotion to the cause beyond the call of duty."  In 1966, Wolff gave the fifth Two-Shilling Award to William S. Hall, “one of our Founding Fathers.” 
 
William S. Hall was, indeed, there at the beginning.  A member of Christopher Morley’s Three Hours For Lunch Club and Grillparzer Club (Morley’s clubs that eventually morphed into the BSI), Hall frequently was mentioned in Morley’s Saturday Review of Literature articles.  Hall attended the "<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/02/the-1934-bsi-dinner.html">first meeting</a>" of the BSI, on January 6, 1934.  In his 1/27/1934 “Bowling Green” article, Morley wrote: 
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
W.S.H. [i.e., Bill Hall] secretary of the Baker Street Irregulars, has allowed us to look over the minutes of the first meeting of the club.”</blockquote>
In 1944, when Edgar Smith instituted Investiture in the BSI, Hall was part of the first class of Investitures, as The Blue Carbuncle. 
 
The Two-Shilling Award is a tradition that has lasted through the years, and it is still periodically bestowed on worthy BSI. For a list of Two-Shilling Award recipients, see our <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/links.html">Links</a> page. 
 
The BSI Trust acquired Hall’s Two-Shilling Award in 2014.
