The Dinner celebrating the 145th anniversary of the Master’s birth began with the “surprise presence of New York Governor George Pataki,” who was greeted with effusive applause. He had recently appointed Albert Rosenblatt to the Court of Appeals and had presided over Judge Rosenblatt’s swearing-in ceremony. Governor Pataki was the first state governor to attend a BSI annual dinner, though it was noted that New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt had been a Sherlockian and had gone on to serve as President of the United States. Peter Blau’s account of the Dinner (see Reports on the Dinner) notes that “the governor did not seize the opportunity to announce his future plans.” 
 
The Buy-Laws were read by Kenneth Lanza. Toasts: to Mrs. Hudson by Harold Niver; to Mycroft by Tom Francis; to Watson’s Second Wife by Steven Rothman; and to Sherlock Holmes by Michael Kean.  Daniel Posnansky toasted two Old Irregulars James Keddie (both père et fils). Shirley Purves led the recitation of the Musgrave Ritual. George Fletcher and Jon Lellenberg traced the history of BSI dinner venues; John Linsenmeyer offered a new supposition on Charles Augustus Milverton as “victim” of unfortunate ladies who caught his attention. 
 
A lively debate on the favorite and least favored stories in the Canon was moderated by Judge Albert Rosenblatt.  The debaters included George McCormick, Susan Rice, David Stuart Davies, and Andrew Fusco. Robert Katz gave a stirring remembrance of Tom Stix, who had passed away the previous year.  Tom had led the BSI for eleven years, taking over from Julian Wolff just after the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/03/the-1986-bsi-dinner.html">1986 BSI Dinner</a> and announcing his retirement at the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/07/the-1997-bsi-dinner.html">1997 BSI Dinner</a>. 
 
Deborah Fusco was honored as <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a>. Five Irregulars received their Shilling. 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception, Jon Lellenberg received the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Morley-Montgomery Award</a> for his Baker Street Journal Christmas Annual on “’Entertainment and Fantasy': The 1940 BSI Dinner.”  Beverly Wolov read a poem in honor of “The Woman.” Jay and Trish Pearlman displayed their miniature reproduction of the sitting room at 221B.  Judge Albert Rosenblatt presented his now traditional and always creative poetic account of the BSI Dinner, the Sherlockian Weekend, and the Sherlockian Year.

The Dinner celebrating the 144th anniversary of the Master’s birth featured a wealth of diverse presentations and toasts. Among the array of familiar names in the latter, were Mrs. Hudson (by Marsha Pollak), Mycroft Holmes (by Donald Izban) (see Related Material), Watson’s Second Wife (by Steven Rothman), and Sherlock Holmes (by Donald Yates). 
 
Mike Whelan, presiding over his first BSI Dinner as Wiggins, resurrected the old tradition of including a toast to “An Old Irregular,” this year given touchingly by Judge Andrew Peck to William S. Baring-Gould (see Related Material). Bruce Montgomery and members of the Penn Glee Club performed selections from the late Harvey Officer's Sherlockian songbook.  Fritz Sonnenschmidt provided a demonstration of just how a master chef prepares pheasant livers with orange on toast points. 
 
Mary Schulz was toasted as “<a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">The Woman</a>.” Five Irregulars received their Shilling at the Dinner. Wiggins also announced two new BSI office holders. Peter E. Blau was dubbed “Simpson,” as befits the BSI’s official secretary, and Jon Lellenberg was named “Thucydides” as the BSI’s official historian. Lellenberg also offered a moving tribute to the late Dame Jean Conan Doyle. 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception, Susan Rice received the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Morley-Montgomery</a> Award for her piece entitled “Watson’s Hidden Addiction.”  Judge Albert Rosenblatt presented his now traditional and always creative poetic account of the BSI Dinner, the Sherlockian Weekend, and the Sherlockian Year. 
 
The BSJ’s report ends by affirming: “This was Mike Whelan’s first BSI dinner as “Wiggins” and it was judged by all to be a magnificent success. Congratulations to Mike; we look forward to many more.”

The 1997 BSI Dinner

The Dinner celebrating the 143rd anniversary of the Master’s birth was a momentous one.  The usual traditions and toasts were performed, including the Sherlock Holmes Prayer, the reading of the BSI Constitution and Buy-Laws, and the reciting of the Musgrave Ritual. 
 
Robert Katz once again toasted The Second Mrs. Watson, William Hyder toasted Mycroft Holmes, Susan Rice toasted Mrs. Hudson, and Sherry Rose-Bond ended the formal toasts with one to “The Most Dangerous Gang in London.”  Bruce Montgomery regaled the crowd with his father’s “Aunt Clara” and his own set of new verses. 
 
Tom Stix then turned the program over to Mike Whelan, who emceed a riotously funny roast of Tom. Mike Whelan then presented to Tom and his wife Dorothy two beautiful expressions of the BSI’s gratitude for their work on our behalf.  Dorothy received a crystal vase on which was inscribed “Presented with Affection to Dorothy K. Stix, The The Woman, by the BSI, January 10, 1997.”  Tom received a crystal presentation piece, etched with the alternate dust jacket design for the British edition of The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes by Vincent Starrett (published, appropriately enough, in 1934, the year of the founding of the BSI) inscribed “With gratitude to Thomas L. Stix, Jr., Wiggins, for keeping the memory of the Master green, by the BSI, January 10, 1997.” 
 
Tom Stix announced that he was stepping down after eleven years as Wiggins, and was passing the mantle on to Mike Whelan. (Listen to the recording below.) Dante Torrese closed the program with “A Long Evening with Holmes.” 
 
Beverly E. Wolov was honored as “The Woman.” Eight Irregulars received their shillings. 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception, David Stuart Davies performed The Hound of the Baskervilles in a one-man, seven minute performance.  Philip Shreffler was presented with the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Morley-Montgomery Award</a>.  Judge Albert Rosenblatt presented his annual poetic account of the BSI Dinner, the Sherlockian Weekend, and the Sherlockian Year.

Thomas L. Stix, Jr. (The Norwood Builder) became the head of the BSI (Wiggins) after the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/03/the-1986-bsi-dinner.html">1986 BSI Dinner</a>.  At the 1997 BSI Dinner, Stix announced that he was stepping down and that Michael Whelan (Vincent Spaulding) would be the new head of the BSI.  You can hear his announcement in this 7 minute vignette from the 1997 BSI Dinner.  Stix (whose father was also a BSI member) was invested at the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/07/the-1961-bsi-dinner.html">1961 BSI Dinner</a>.

The Dinner celebrating the 142nd anniversary of the Master’s birth included the usual traditions and imaginative toasts.  Tom Stix was at the podium for the dinner, thankfully looking well after a recent illness. Sherry Rose-Bond toasted Peter Steiler the Elder. Robert Katz’s annual toasts to The Second Mrs. Watson have become legendary, and, once again, he did not fail to outrage the attendees.  The theme of the 1996 BSI Dinner was “My collection of M’s is a fine one,” and this was reflected in presentations by Joseph Moran and Shirley Purves. Evelyn Herzog also celebrated Canonical M’s in verse.  Tom Stix announced that <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">Bob Thomalen</a> would be stepping down as Cartwright of the BSI, and Mike Whelan would be filling this position. With the sad loss of the BSI’s secretary, John Bennett Shaw, Tom and Ruthann Stetak will officially take over the title of Simpsons, a role that they had been performing during the past year. 
 
Barbara Herbert was honored as “The Woman.” Eight Irregulars received their shillings. The Queen Victoria Medal was awarded to Robert Thomalen for his work as Cartwright on behalf of the BSI. (See the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1969-bsi-dinner.html">1969 BSI Dinner</a> for background on the Medal.) 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception, Margaret Nydell was presented with the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Morley-Montgomery Award</a>, the first given since 1980.  Judge Albert Rosenblatt presented his now traditional and always creative poetic account of the BSI Dinner, the Sherlockian Weekend, and the Sherlockian Year.

The Dinner celebrating the 141st anniversary of the Master’s birth boasted a diverse slate of presentations, including Marina Stajic’s “put-‘em-on-one-at-a-time” presentation on Victorian undergarments; Paul Herbert’s report on two Sherlockian films that never made it from script to screen; Tom Stetak’s discussion of Canonical lawn ornaments (which might well have been subtitled “beware the deadly sundial”); David Stuart Davies’s well footnoted report; and Sherry Rose-Bond’s toast to the “Second Most Dangerous Man in London” (not who one might think!). 
 
Myrtle T. Robinson was honored as “The Woman.” Eight Irregulars received their shillings. Dr. Robert S. Katz was honored with the Two-Shilling Award. 
 
At the next day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Reception, William R. Cochran, editor of The Baker Street Journal announced that the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Morley-Montgomery Memorial Award</a> (established by Lew David Feldman in 1958 for the best contribution to the BSJ) has been revived. The author of the best paper published in 1995 will receive a prize of $500 during the 1996 BSI Weekend.

In addition to the 140th anniversary of the Master’s birth, this year marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Baker Street Irregulars by Christopher Morley in 1934. In honor of this signal occasion, the birthday weekend was marked by numerous celebrations. The BSI Dinner agenda featured the usual toasts and traditions and Bruce Montgomery's melodic tribute to his grand-aunt Clara and to his father. It then focused on 60 years of BSI history, including George Fletcher's anecdotal history of The Baker Street Journal, Susan Rice and Mickey Fromkin’s survey of Irregular poetry through the decades, Steve Rothman's discussion of the very early meetings of the BSI, and reminiscences of the annual Dinners by David Weiss (a stalwart attendee for more than 40 years). Bill Schweickert's poetic birthday tribute to the Master ended the program.  Theresa (Mrs. Robert E.) Thomalen was honored as “The Woman.” Twelve Irregulars received their Investitures at the Dinner. 
 
At the following day’s reception for all Sherlockians, Catherine Cooke received an Investiture. Eleanor O’Connor received the Queen Victoria Medal in recognition of her many years of assistance at the BSI annual dinners (see the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1969-bsi-dinner.html">1969 BSI Dinner</a> for background on the Medal). There were also Jon Lellenberg and Clint Gould's "March of Time" report on the history of the BSI, a performance by Paul Singleton and Philip Brogdon of an excerpt from Jeremy Paul's play "The Secret of Sherlock Holmes," a warm tribute to Tom Stix delivered by <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/06/robert-thomalen-interview-oral-history.html">Bob Thomalen</a>, and poetic reports by Al Rosenblatt and Marilynne McKay on the events of the previous evening. 
 
This 60th birthday weekend was a fine testament to the reality that, as BSJ editor William Cochran phrased it in his “Editor’s Gas-Lamp” article, “The Irregulars survive because all orders of Sherlockian are as inseparable as Holmes and Watson.”

The 139th anniversary of the Master’s birth featured the standard repertoire of toasts and traditions. Steven Rothman toasted the second coming of Watson's first wife, followed by Robert Katz's promise of a rebuttal next year. Attendees were treated to a bevy of diverse presentations, including Ralph Hall's expert discussion of Canonical insects, Joseph Fink's narration of the rise and fall of Professor James Moriarty, and a tribute by Robert Mangler and Robert Hahn to Vincent Starrett. 
 
Mary Ann Bradley was honored as “The Woman.” Six Irregulars received their Shilling. 
 
At the following day’s Sherlockian Cocktail Party, Philip Shreffler received the Queen Victoria Medal (see the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1969-bsi-dinner.html">1969 BSI Dinner</a> for background on the Medal) in recognition of his dedication as the Baker Street Journal editor.

The 138th anniversary of the Master’s birth provided ample evidence—if any were still required at this juncture—of the global appeal of Sherlockiana and Sherlockian scions. Irv Kamil reported on The Asian Travelers, a new Sherlockian society founded the previous year at  the Great Wall of China, and visitors from France (Jean-Pierre Cagnat) and Japan (Yuichi Hirayama and Hirotaka Ueda) were introduced. 
 
This was the first BSI Dinner at which women were in attendance, the BSI having been opened to women by Tom Stix at the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1991-bsi-dinner.html">1991 Saturday Sherlockian Cocktail Party</a>. There were fifteen women attending this first co-ed BSI Dinner: Maureen Green, Evelyn Herzog, Karen Johnson, Kate Karlson, Eleanor O'Connor, Marsha Pollak, Susan Rice, Lloyd Rose, Sherry Rose-Bond, Julie Rosenblatt, Marina Stajic, Ruthann Stetak, Francine Swift, Jean Upton, and Delia Vargas. 
 
Steve Rothman showcased a treasure: a rare audio recording of Christopher Morley speaking about Sherlock Holmes and reading from “The Adventure of the Dying Detective.” Ely Liebow discussed the Sherlockian aspects of "The $64,000 Question" (the 1956 television quiz show). The program also included Edward Vatza's discussion of "The Gloria Scott", and Joseph Fink's investigative report on Dr. Watson's marital affairs. Bruce Montgomery led the assembled in singing “Aunt Clara” and followed this with his own “Father’s Folly, or Aunt Clara Revisited.” Dr. Hirayama then rendered the chorus of “Aunt Clara” in his native Japanese; subsequently, Don Yates did the same in Spanish. The Baker Street Journal notes: “This might have gone on, getting really problematical, but it didn’t.” 
 
Margaret Walsh was celebrated as “The Woman.” Five new Irregulars were invested at the Dinner.  Two more received their Irregular Shillings at the Sherlockian Cocktail Party the following day. 
 
At the Sherlockian Cocktail Party on the following day, Theresa Thomalen was awarded the Queen Victoria Medal (see the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1969-bsi-dinner.html">1969 BSI Dinner</a> for background on the Medal). <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/10/peter-blau-interview-oral-history.html">Peter Blau</a> expertly presided over the Sherlockiana auction which raised $610 for the BSI’s Dr. John H. Watson Fund, which offers financial assistance to Sherlockians (membership in the BSI or the ASH is not required) who might otherwise be unable to participate in the weekend's festivities. The proceeding also included a raffle which featured a bottle of Madeira (1934 vintage) donated to the Dr. John H. Watson Fund by Patricia Guy.

The 1991 BSI Dinner

The 137th anniversary of the Master’s birth included all of our traditional rites and ceremonies. Joan [Mrs. Benton] Wood was honored as The Woman. The busy program featured John Bennett Shaw’s paean to the late Commissionaire, Dr. Julian Wolff, read in Mr. Shaw’s absence by Richard Schull. Robert N. Brodie mused on “what ever happened to” a number of well-known Canonical characters. Don Yates proffered two reader’s digested versions of The Hound of the Baskervilles (one sixty seconds long, the other five words long), and Wayne Swift essayed a portion of his ongoing scholarship concerning Silver Blaze. Bill Rabe acquainted members with the shocking results of his investigations into the BSI’s unofficial anthem, “Aunt Clara” (proving that all these years we’ve been singing it to the wrong tune — a Scottish folk song called “Mush Mush”). Norman Davis plunged the “art” of the pun to a new nadir in his survey of Sherlockian horse-racing handicapping. Don Redmond was given The Good Old Index Award honoring his 21 years of indexing of the Baker Street Journal. David Musto gave a lucid account of the founding of the first Sherlockian society in the Soviet Union, The Red-Headed League of Moscow, a long-awaited event in which Mr. Musto lent a gently guiding hand. The report in the BSJ states, “The Baker Street Irregulars wish every good fortune to these new-found Soviet friends.” 
 
However, 1991 will forever be remembered in the annals of BSI history for the Sherlockian Cocktail Party on the following day.  At the Cocktail Party, Tom Stix formally opened the BSI to women in announcing seven additional BSI Investitures, six of whom were women.  His emotional announcement can be heard below.  Two of these Investitures went to Katherine McMahon (one of the original solvers of the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/bsi-history.html">Sherlock Holmes Crossword Puzzle</a>) and Edwin V. King (who had earned the honor in the 1940s).  Next, he bestowed an Investiture on Dame Jean Conan Doyle (Arthur Conan Doyle’s daughter).  Stix then went on to invest Edith Meiser, Julia Carlson Rosenblatt, Evelyn Herzog, and Susan Rice.  He ended his moving presentation by emphasizing that these were genuine Investitures in the Baker Street Irregulars, entitling the women to invitations to the Annual Dinner.  His announcement was interrupted by several standing ovations. History had turned, and the BSI Dinner was now co-ed. 
 
Also at the Sherlockian cocktail party, the Commissionaire’s Award for outstanding contributions to Sherlockiana was conferred upon H. George Fletcher who, in his capacity of Director of Fordham University Press, had served for sixteen years as publisher of the Baker Street Journal and of a number of important Sherlockian books including the first volumes of the <a href="http://www.bakerstreetjournal.com/itemsforsale/bsihistoryseries.html">Baker Street Irregulars’ History Project</a>. (See the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1988-bsi-dinner.html">1988 BSI Dinner</a> for background on this award.)

Thomas L. Stix, Jr. (The Norwood Builder) became the head of the BSI (Wiggins) after the 1986 BSI Dinner.  He served in that capacity until 1997.  At the 1991 Sherlockian Cocktail Party on the day after the 1991 BSI Dinner, Stix invested six women into the BSI to great applause.  He said that, henceforth, female BSI would be invited to the Annual Dinner. You can hear his moving presentation in this 12-minute vignette from the 1991 Sherlockian Cocktail Party.  Stix (whose father was also a BSI member) was invested at the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/07/the-1961-bsi-dinner.html">1961 BSI Dinner</a>.

The 136th anniversary of the Master’s birth was resolutely “observed without scruple”— including Robert Katz delivering another of his toasts to “The Second Mrs. Watson.”  Eleanor Sullivan was honored as The Woman. The evening’s lively program opened with the Baker Street Journal’s publisher, George Fletcher, speaking on “Copyrights and Copywrongs” regarding the intellectual property status of the BSJ’s contents. There were also presentations by Al Rodin (on Joseph Bell, testicles, sex, and syphilis), Jon Lellenberg (on the BSI archival history project), David Musto (on his role in founding a Sherlockian society at the Great Wall Station in the Antarctic), Ed Vatza (on the Canonicity of "The Blanched Soldier"), and Al Rosenblatt (on Sherlock Holmes' amorous walks). Seven Irregulars received their Shillings. 
 
This Dinner had actually been intended to be even more momentous than it was.  Tom Stix had invited Lisa McGaw (who received the BSI Investiture of Mrs. Hudson in <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/02/the-1982-bsi-dinner.html#more">1982</a>) to attend the 1990 BSI Dinner, and she was planning on attending. She would have been the first woman to attend a BSI Annual Dinner.  Unfortunately, Lisa McGaw suddenly passed away in December 1989.   She was to have been a recipient of the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/glossary.html">Two-Shilling Award</a>, and it was given to her posthumously.  Two other recipients received the Two-Shilling Award that year, Richard D. Lesh and W.T. Rabe.   The proceedings concluded on another moving note with Philip Brogdon’s rendition of P.M. Stone’s “Sherlock Holmes.” “[T]ears edged the eyes of all but those with the hardest of hearts.” 
 
At the Sherlockian Cocktail Party on the following day, Dorothy Beverly West and Katherine McMahon were awarded the Queen Victoria Medal (in absentia) (see the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/09/the-1969-bsi-dinner.html">1969 Dinner</a> for background on the Medal). The report on the weekend in the BSJ notes that they are “the last known surviving individuals submitting correct solutions to the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2015/01/bsi-history.html">crossword puzzle</a>…used by Christopher Morley in 1934 as the criterion for membership in the Baker Street Irregulars.”  In addition, the Commissionaire’s Award for outstanding contributions to Sherlockiana was conferred upon Henry Lauritzen, long the “sparking plug” of the Sherlock Holmes Klubben i Danmark (see the <a href="http://www.bsitrust.org/2016/04/the-1988-bsi-dinner.html">1988 Dinner</a> for background on this award).
